Spacefleet in the 20th and 21st Centuries

1950 - 1995 THE MARS YEARS

1950

Formation of Spacefleet. Experimental multi-stage chemical rockets are tested, first unmanned then manned.

1950-1960

Pioneering flights by W. Dare and others.

1963

First Lunar landing: Project Apollo. (Crew includes Hubert Guest).

1964

First Spacefleet base on Luna is established. Long-range spaceships are developed for expedition to Mars.

1965

First Spacefleet expedition to Mars under command of Admiral Grosvenor. (Guest commands one of the ships).
Helenicon ore is discovered in small quantities in North Africa.
Final U. N. peace congress. All stockpiles of H-bombs are destroyed

1966

The brilliant scientist Prof. Hemming discovers an important modification to Einstein’s Relativity theory opening up the way for the development of Impulse Wave Theory.
Larger nations sign treaty, whereby the U.N. council is recognised as a world Government, with a World President. Some smaller states reject the concept of World Government. Mutual Defence Pact signed by Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia.

1967

First permanent Spacefleet base on Mars.

1968

Scientists refine Helenium from Helenicon ore, but do not yet realise its full potential as an energy source and storage medium.

1969

Admiral Grosvenor becomes head of Spacefleet. During his time as controller, virtually all of Spacefleet's energies are directed to the exploration and development of Mars, especially as a possible food growing region to solve the widely predicted, coming world shortage.

1970

The Freight company "Cosmic Spacelines" is established. From these humble beginnings as an Earth - Luna courier service, "Cosmic" became in a few years, the largest Freight carrier in the Solar system.

1970-1980

Important technological advances. Impulse power discovered and developed. Helenium's use in Impulse technology is realised. Alternative "Halley drive" rejected by most scientists as having no practical application. Spacefleet adopts impulse power after comparative tests.

1977

Grosvenor retires. The new controller is a "Grosvenor man", who continues the Admiral's emphasis on Mars.

1978

Series of bad harvests causes the first serious World food shortage. Enrico Donanza is swept to power in Argentina in a wave of social unrest and food riots.

1979

New Controller takes over. He is not of the "Mars school" of Grosvenor. Under him it is suggested that Venus might be a better alternative than Mars as a possible food source. He instigates scientific survey of the mystery planet, using unmanned spacecraft.
Launching of the "Admiral Grosvenor" training ship.
Argentina takes over its allies, Bolivia and Brazil by force: Enrico Donanza proclaims the South American Federation, becoming its first president by popular plebiscite.

1980

Hubert Guest receives knighthood for services to Space exploration.
Edwin Hirshbaum invents the strong lightweight alloy Hirshinium.
Halley McHoo, chief of "Cosmic" Spacelines, tests the "Halley Drive" in the Long range ship "Scotia" piloted by W. Dare. Its initial range is at least as far as the Asteroid belt, where a secret development base is established.

1981

First impulse relay station established on Earth.
Astronomers at the McHoo Asteroid base, using the "Halley" Telescope, discover the distant planet Terra Nova.
Work begins on the "Galactic Pioneer".

1982

Janus 1 satellite in high Earth orbit is launched. The Space-station serves as a training base for Space-cadets.

1982-1987

Impulse Relay stations and transmitters built on Luna and Mars.

1983

The astronomer Balsamo discovers atmospheres on the moons of Saturn.

1984

World stocks of Helenium (necessary for Impulse Wave technology), run dangerously low. New controller, a "Grosvenor" man, instigates intensive survey of Mars to locate new Helenicon reserves. Plans for new remote surveys of Venus are postponed, and renewed efforts are made to cultivate crops on the Red planet.
The "Cosmic" test ship "Scotia", is destroyed in space trials.
Major-One – Earth-Moon transfer satellite put into orbit at Lagrange point

1985

Cosmic's Galactic Pioneer mission using Halley Drive. Disaster on take-off. Asteroid base destroyed. Death of Halley McHoo, earth's greatest scientist.
Doctor Blasco picks up radio signals from the vicinity of Saturn.
Small deposits of Helenicon are located in Brazil. Donanza proclaims the SAF a Space power and forms the South American Space service.
More bad harvests, lead to further shortages of food and riots in many cities. World government imposes rationing.

1986

Sir Hubert Guest appointed deputy controller of Space-fleet.
Discovery of Helenicon in Brazil leads to speculation for the Ore throughout central and South America.

1987

Dan Dare joins spacefleet as Cadet Navigator.

1988

Quantities of Helenicon are located in Mexico.
World Helenium Corps founded.

1989-1990

Dare serves on the Janus orbital Space-station SAF launches the Luna Empress, the largest passenger Spacecraft ever built. At its launch Donanza proclaims himself Dictator for Life.

1991

Dare becomes Pilot Major and takes part in a Lunar exploration mission.
Albert F Digby becomes Dan's batman. Their first Spacefleet mission to Luna, in the Moon-run. Dare sees service in the "Mars run".
Dare's mission to Mars. He defeat's von Schweiller's plans to sabotage Spacefleet's operations on the Red planet.
Social Re-habilitation Centre established on Luna for the treatment of dangerous criminals.
Controller resigns. Sir Hubert Guest becomes controllerafter the successful resolution of the Schweiller affair.

1991

Spacetours Company is established, with the aim of opening up the tourist trade to Mars.
Large deposits of Helenicon ore are found on Mars.
Due to the increasing number of civilians now working on and visiting the Red Planet, it is decided to appoint a civilian administration. Lord Desmond appointed its first governor.

1992

Sir Hubert, realising the unsatisfactory results of attempts to grow sufficient foodstuffs on Martian soil turns once again to the idea of Venus as an alternative. He orders reapraisal of existing data from unmanned ships and sets up the Venus Research Group to this end, headed by Prof. Sigmund Sax.
New researches are undertaken into non-Impulse craft, or early versions of the Rotor ship. First results with fission-drive are, however, unsuccessful.
Mars Astoria is built.

1992

Dare chosen for Interplanetary Exploration course on Luna and is promoted to Colonel.

1993

Professor Peabody joins Venus Research Group, analysing the Venus data. They decide that the planet might well support plant life, and recommend investigation.
Vitamineats corp. is founded to provide synthetic food substitutes, as rationing becomes more stringent.

1994

The Orion Spaceship is launched on the first exploration mission to Venus. The ship is destroyed whilst approaching Venus.
The Argonaunt is also lost on a second Venus mission.
Dan Dare becomes Spacefleet's Chief Pilot.

1995

The Kingfisher under captain Crane is lost in Venus space.
